Vintage is huge right now. And it should be because it’s awesome! I adore vintage photos and a lot of photographers have made it part of their brand to edit images in that hazy yellowed washed out style that makes vintage images so beautiful. As much as I appreciate the look of those photos, that just isn’t my personal style of editing. I love bright bold colors in my photography. But I love vintage things and struggled with how I could maintain my own personal photographic voice but also participate in this great genre. That is why I LOVE LOVE LOVE this photo shoot!
Meet Vanessa and David! The truth is, this gorgeous couple isn’t really engaged. But they are a real couple; of course they are because who can fake these kisses? Vanessa and her British beau graciously agreed to help me put together this vintage-inspired production, which we shot at beautiful Lake Cuyamaca near Julian, California. The idea was to pull together a wardrobe for the couple that was vintage-inspired but not necessarily over the top, and therefor accessible to the more modern couple. Our location and props also play into this idea with a vintage style bike and a picnic set up with old fashion baskets, sodas and pie.
The resulting images were stunning on their own, but instead of washing them out to make them look older as the vintage genre usually calls for, I stayed true to my editing style and made the colors pop. Sure I was tempted to take an image or two and pop a sepia toned filter on it just to see the effect, but in the end I loved them in color more than anything else.
I’m really excited about this colorful take on vintage. After all, our older relatives were just as bright and colorful as we are today, but the beauty of those washed out images was earned with time!
